A 52-year-old Mulberry man was arrested early Monday and charged in a fatal hit-and-run crash.

John Anthony Stone was arrested in connection with Friday's fatal hit-and-run on southbound Bailey Road approaching the intersection of Wells Road in Mulberry.

According to the Polk County's Sheriff's Office, Paul Lavon Wooten Jr., 26, was driving his Honda motorcycle around 11:15 p.m. when he was struck from behind. Wooten was taken to Lakeland Regional Health, where he later died.

Officials said a white pickup truck with chrome wheels, possibly a F-150 or F-250, was seen leaving the crash site.

After receiving a tip about Stone being a possible suspect, Polk deputies responded to Stone's Mulberry home to investigate.

Upon arriving, deputies located a 2004 silver Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck with chrome rims and what appeared to be a factory lift. The pickup had damage consistent with the crash.

When questioned about the crash, Stone told deputies he thought he fell asleep and awoke after feeling a bump. Stone told deputies he knew he had struck the motorcycle but did not stop.

Stone told deputies he found the damage to his truck and made some repairs. Stone has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and tampering with evidence.

Stone was transported to the Polk County Jail where he is currently being held on no bond.
