A former high school track coach is accused of having sex with a student.
Investigators say Dwight Smith, 47, of Wesley Chapel, had sex with a Freedom High School student he coached during a team trip in Gainesville.
Smith has since been fired and is facing two counts of sexual battery of a victim 12 to 18 years old.
According to this arrest affidavit, Smith had sex with the 17-year-old several times while the team stayed overnight at out of town track meets.
Parents are horrified to learn someone they trusted could do something like this.
“I think about the security of my daughter,” said parent Mara Fineberg. “We use teachers and coaches as an example and we can’t trust them. Right now I don’t trust anybody.”
Police say Smith gave the girl alcohol and the keys to his room and although it was consensual, the girl was underage.
The student told administrators at the school, who turned the investigation over to authorities.
Smith was let go after he admitted to having an inappropriate conversation with the girl.
Smith was also an ESE aid at the school before he was fired.
