Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has taken a lead among GOP presidential candidates in Iowa, according to a new survey released this weekend.

Cruz has opened up a 10 percentage-point lead over billionaire Donald Trump.

Thirty-one percent of likely Iowa caucusgoers contacted last week phone survey said Cruz was the candidate they'd support.

Trump's support was at 21 percent, followed by retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson at 13 percent and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida at 10 percent. The rest of Republican field had support in the single digits or less than 1 percent.

The numbers were released Saturday by The Des Moines Register and Bloomberg Politics.

The Iowa caucuses take place Feb. 1.
