Pinellas Park police say a Tampa man was chasing his ex-girlfriend when she crashed her vehicle, killing her new boyfriend.

Yordan Acosta Cortina, 37, is facing charges of manslaughter and aggravated stalking in connection with the crash, which happened shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday in Pinellas Park.

Police say Cortina had been stalking Madelyn Gonzalez-Mederos, 29, after the couple recently broke up. Cortina was waiting in the parking lot of Gonzalez-Mederos' place of employment to confront her when she and her boyfriend, Addienys Calderon-Martinez, 25, got off work, police say.

Gonzalez-Mederos drove Calderon-Martinez's 2010 Honda Accord east on Bryan Dairy Road, then turned south on 66th Street. Police say Cortina followed.

The couple pulled over at a gas station to confirm that it was Cortina who was following them. Gonzalez-Mederos then drove back onto 66th Street, heading north in an attempt to get away from Cortina, who was still following, police said.

Gonzalez-Mederos made a U-turn and headed back south on 66th Street, then sped through the intersection of Bryan Dairy Road in an attempt to get away from Cortina, police say.

A deputy saw the two cars speeding south on 66th Street and tried to catch up to them, but before he could do so, Gonzalez-Mederos lost control of the vehicle and left the road near the intersection with 100th Avenue.

Calderon-Martinez died in the ensuing crash.

Gonzalez-Mederos was taken to a local hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening.

Cortina was detained and questioned by police detectives. They say he described what took place, and denied that he ever used his vehicle to strike or ram the victim's vehicle, police say. They said they have no evidence that took place either.

Cortina told police he was trying to confront Gonzalez-Mederos about their break-up.

Police say they responded to a verbal domestic violence complaint on Dec. 8 at Gonzalez-Mederos' work, where Cortina is accused of causing a disturbance. Police say they provided Gonzalez-Mederos with information as to how to obtain a protective order, but they don't know if she followed through.

Cortina was booked into the Pinella County Jail.
