A Fort Meade man was killed Tuesday in a head-on crash in Lake Alfred.
Matthew Charles Dickerson, 34, died at the scene of the crash, which happened at 9 p.m. on County Road 557.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the driver of a 2015 white Chevy van was heading north on County Road 557 and attempting to pass another vehicle when the van hit Dickerson's 2011 gray Kia, which was traveling in the southbound lanes.
The driver of the van and his passenger were taken to Heart of Florida Hospital, where they were treated and released for minor injuries.
Dickerson had to be extricated from his car by first responders. He was declared dead at the scene.
Investigators said all three people involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts at the time. Neither speed nor impairment is believed to be a factor on the part of either driver.
The road was closed for about four hours after the crash. The investigation continues.
