There are many ways to drive from Tampa to Jacksonville.

You can head east on I-4 to Daytona Beach, then north on I-95, or you can drive north on I-75 to I-10, then head east. Some travel north on I-75 then use US 301 to complete the trip.

But however you drive it, the only way you can't make the journey is direct.

That may soon change. The state has released information on a plan to create a future transportation corridor between its two fastest growing urban areas according to Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson Kris Carson.

"Right now it's a proposal," she said. "We have to meet with a bunch of stakeholders, have public meetings and make sure that we're going to build this where it's smart growth and smart development and the least impact to the land and the people of Florida."

One proposed route brings a new highway from Jacksonville through Ocala, then continues on to join the north terminus of the Suncoast Parkway.  From there traffic would travel south to Tampa or St Petersburg.

Jim Wood chairs the Future Corridors Project for the state.  He says it's not only cars that he's thinking of with these new plans.

"We really want to see what we can do to support freight movement in the State and how this overall plan of future corridors can help support that."

State officials will begin conversations with the 19 Florida counties impacted by the proposed roadway.  It will also reach out for community input throughout the process.

There is no date set for completion of the new corridor.
