A Tampa man is facing charges after police said he killed his father Thursday afternoon.

Gregory Moran, 38, is facing second-degree murder charges in the death of his father, 60-year-old Gregory James Walker.

According to Tampa police, they received a 911 call from Moran, who said he had killed someone.

When police arrived at a home on 32nd Street N, they found Walker suffering from upper body trauma. Walker was taken to Tampa General Hospital with a faint pulse, where he was pronounced dead.

Walker's family remembers him as a hard worker with a big heart.

"His son had needed somewhere to stay and as him being his father he made sure he had somewhere to stay," said his sister-in-law, Donna Williams.

Arrest reports show Walker was beaten in the head with a cane, and that Moran hit him between 30 and 50 times.

This wasn't the first time Moran was in trouble for hurting his father. According to another arrest report, Moran was arrested exactly a year ago for hitting his father as he "lay in a fetal position."

Moran was accused of also hitting his father with a closed fist several times.

Moran suffers from a mental disability, and Walker told family members he was scared to death of his own son.

"He just told me he had threatened him, he told him he wanted to kill him," Williams said. "Never thought anything like this would happen."

Walker was a chef at the University of Tampa over the last two years. His family is in Detroit making funeral plans.

Police questioned Moran, who they said confessed to the crime. He reportedly told them he wanted to kill his father at 8 a.m., but he started hitting him with a can at 3 p.m.

Moran is being held in jail without bond. Police have not released a motive.
