A passenger in a car stopped by the Florida Highway Patrol overnight in St. Petersburg pushed his way into the driver's seat, slammed a trooper's arm in the door and fled the scene.

Rashaad Malik Browning, 19, of St. Petersburg was later arrested and charged with 13 crimes, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, carjacking, grand theft and fleeing and eluding.

According to the FHP, troopers stopped a rented 2015 Dodge Charger for traveling on I-275 near 54th Avenue N with no headlights just after midnight Saturday.

The driver pulled over and the trooper approached. But after another trooper arrived and took an interest in Browning, Browning sprinted back into the passenger seat, forced the driver out, slammed the trooper's arm in the door and fled southbound on I-275, authorities said.

He exited onto 38th Avenue N and soon after crashed into the center median. After a brief chase, Browning was caught by St. Petersburg police officers.

Javier Hernandez, the trooper who had his arm slammed in the door, sustained a minor shoulder injury and was not hospitalized, authorities said.

Browning was booked in the Pinellas County Jail.
