Inverness in Citrus County has just been ranked one of the top cities for retirement.

Residents are quick to say how nice their city is. It's quiet and full of history, and there are a lot of things to do.

"It's not all palm trees and tar," said resident Dianne Bilodeau. "It's a little bit of everything. Hills, trees, farming ... more rural, and we really love that."

Bilodeau moved to Inverness 18 years ago and says it's the best-kept secret around when it comes to retirement.

"Don't tell anybody," she said.

Well, it's too late because the word is out. A financial modeling website in New York called SmartAsset just ranked Inverness as the No. 2 city in the state and nation for retirement.

The company looked at tax-friendliness, medical care and social life. The city has about 100 medical offices, a hospital, nine parks and much more. All of that helped push Inverness to the No. 2 spot.

City manager Frank DiGiovanni says there's a lot to like about Inverness.

"The amount of activity going on ... the vibrancy, beautiful place, city on the lakes," he said.

The city of Stuart got the No. 1 ranking for the state and nation.
