Police early Wednesday arrested a transient in the shooting death of a St. Petersburg man last month.

Willie Mathers Newton, 37, fatally shot Edward Williams, 47, at a home on the 1100 block of 10th Avenue S on Jan. 19, police said.

The two had argued over an earlier altercation with a woman, investigators said. Two witnesses identified Newton as the shooter.

Newton was booked in the Pinellas County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder.
