Shooting has been suspended at the Plant City Police Department Pistol Range.
Resident Gary Hazen, 64, said a bullet hit his home half a mile away. Hazen said a bullet struck his back door, bounced off the tile floor and ricocheted around his kitchen on Sunday.
Hazen said Hillsborough sheriff’s investigators say that bullet that struck his home was fired from a gun at that range.
“Whoever shot this should’ve failed because it went, evidently there’s a 30-foot berm back there and they shot over the berm and rain bowed this bullet into my house,” he said.
Hazen said if that bullet struck a few seconds later it would've struck his daughter who was opening the door,” Hazen said.
Investigators say at the time that bullet hit Hazen’s back door, the Department of Homeland Security was training a private security firm called Paragon Systems on the gun range.
Hazen said Paragon Systems begrudgingly offered to replace his back door.
“You get some estimates on your door and we’ll replace your door and that’s all I got out of him but he was busy at the airport and acted like I was bothering him. So, I just told him that wouldn’t suffice,” Hazen said. “If I have to get a lawyer to get a little satisfaction, then that’s what I’ll do.”
Detectives say who fired the shot and how it ended up in Hazen’s home is still under investigation.
Bay News 9 tried contacting Paragon but did not get a response.
A Homeland Security spokesperson says Paragon Systems will not be using that gun range while this investigation is underway. Homeland Security is also conducting its own investigation and apologized to Hazen for the incident.
