The Florida Aquarium is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month in Hillsborough County.

The aquarium has changed the face of Channelside Drive in Tampa and continues to open new exhibits and attractions for people of all ages.

During a month-long celebration, kids can enjoy scavenger hunts, shows and a wall of aquarium memorabilia going back through the years.

"I think it's a really good educational experience for the children and it gets people out of the house," said Tara Quin, a Bay-area resident.

Over two decades, about 13 million visitors have walked through the aquarium's doors. Visitors have fond memories of the wildlife.

"It was amazing because I always like wildlife and stuff, and I spent the night with Girl Scouts one time against the big fish tank," Quin said.

For Anna Hodge, the aquarium brings back memories of fun times with her parents. Now, she is making new memories with her children.

"We're getting ready to go see the sharks and the coral reef right now, so they are excited to see that," Hodge said.

The aquarium has always had fish but has added other animals, like lemurs, over the years.

Future plans include adding more interactive shows, like Secret Sea Life Superheroes, that will premiere this month.

The Florida Aquarium is a not-for-profit organization and is publicly operated. The aquarium is 250,000 square feet and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
