The "pay it forward" movement has come to the animal shelter in Manatee County.

Someone who adopts one of the many dogs available at Animal Services in Palmetto could be in for a big surprise.

That’s because many of the adoption fees have been waived as part of what is being called the Hard Luck Hounds Scratch Off.

“We had an anonymous donor come forward and say that she would like to pay nine adoption fees for our hard-luck hounds,” said Debra Starr, with Animal Network.

The staff at the shelter picked various dogs for the free adoption gift. Only a handful of people know the identity of the dogs chosen.

So far, only one has been adopted.

If a person picks one of the dogs, they will find out their adoption fees are waived while checking out. Once the adoption is final, they’ll receive a card stating who the gift is from.

They are still required to pay the county tag fee.

The donation comes at a good time. The shelter has a larger than normal amount of dogs at the shelter right now.
