The man accused of shooting and killing a University of Tampa student in 2009 admitted to the crime in jail, according to a man who spent time with him behind bars.

Testifying on Wednesday, Robert Jenkins said suspect David Earl Williams told him he killed UT student Ryan McCall during a robbery attempt on North Boulevard in the Tampa Heights area.

"He was telling me about a robbery that...him and his homeboy or partner whatever, was involved in," Jenkins told the courtroom. "Come to find out that individual had died and that he (Williams) was...kind of concerned about part."

Prosecutors say Williams was the man with a gun that robbed McCall and friend Michael Harahan on Aug. 19, 2009 while they were walking home across the North Boulevard Bridge after a night of drinking in downtown Tampa.

Harahan was able to escape while McCall was shot and died as he tried to get away.

Jenkins, who admitted he cut a deal with prosecutors for less prison time himself in separate cases, said he agreed to talk because he felt bad for McCall's family.

Testimony is expected to last the rest of the week.
