MaryEllen Elia will not be Palm Beach County School's next superintendent.

A search commitee for the district has eliminated Elia from the finalists list.

Elia is Hillsborough County Schools' former superintendent - although the vacationing Elia will retain the title through June.

In January, the Hillsborough County school board voted 4-3 to terminate Elia's contract, despite Elia being recently named Florida’s Superintendent of the Year. The district received hundreds of emails in response to Elia's termination, many of them objecting to the board's decision.

Elia, 66, had been with the district since 1986 and superintendent since 2005. Last month, Elia won the 2015 Women in Leadership Award from the American Association of School Administrators (AASA).

Elia was one of 72 applicants for the Palm Beach County superintendent position.
