A roofing crew preparing a St. Petersburg house for demolition made an explosive discovery Thursday afternoon.

The crew was working on a burned house located at 2633 Union St. S at 3:15 p.m when they discovered a grenade.

Police said the grenade apparent had fallen out through the ceiling as the crew removed a section of the roof.

The Tampa Bomb Squad responded to the scene and determined the grenade was live.

The grenade was taken to a nearby vacant field, buried and detonated safely without further incident.

Police said no one knows the origin of the grenade, and that it may have been in the attic of the home for several years.
