A one-year-old who was shot at a learning center by a three-year-old in South Venice on Friday is recovering, according to the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the two siblings were left along in a car around 4:30 p.m. outside the Sonshine Learning Center, located at 351 Orange Road, when the shooting occurred.

"It has nothing to do with the daycare but it was at the daycare, in a vehicle," said spokeswoman for the Sarasota Sheriff's Office, Wendy Rose. "So, it’s pretty much contained to a family situation.”

The child that was shot showed good signs to paramedics before being airlifted to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, officials said.

“We did have a lot of good information from paramedics before the helicopter took off -- good signs on the condition of the child," said Rose.

Because of privacy laws, the girl's condition is unknown at this time.

Deputies are working to find out where the parents were at the time of the shooting and where the gun was located inside the car. They said no charges are expected to be filed against the parents at this time.
