A crossing guard and retired police officer is being remembered in Clearwater today.

On May 20 of last year, Doug Carey was killed when he was struck by a vehicle that ran a red light at Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard at Belcher Road.

Carey was honored at Skycrest Elementary and at Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard at Belcher Road, the corner where he died. Wreaths were laid at both locations.

Carey was 70 years old. A Clearwater police officer from 1968 through 1987, Carey worked as a crossing guard during the last few years of his life. He was well established in the community and had a wife and adult children.

The man driving the speeding car that killed Carey, 29-year-old Julious Johnson, remains in jail.

According to Clearwater police, Johnson was speeding in a black Cadillac west on Gulf-to-Bay Blvd., ran a red light at Belcher Rd and collided with a Honda. The Cadillac then went off the road and hit Carey.
