The band and chorus director at Strawberry Crest High School is suspected of drunk driving during which she almost hit a deputy’s cruiser, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
Cheri Sleeper, 51, of Apollo Beach, is charged with driving under the influence, refusal to submit to DUI testing with a prior refusal.
According to deputies, on Sunday, May 3, at approximately 9:30 p.m., deputies initiated a traffic stop on the suspect for failing to yield the right of way.
Deputies said she pulled out from a private drive, crossed four lanes of traffic and almost struck the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office marked patrol vehicle.
Deputies said the suspect emitted the odor of an alcoholic beverage, had red/glossy eyes, slurred speech and unsteady balance.
The school district said they are aware of the arrest and Sleeper has been notified that her next step is to come in to speak with the district's Office of Professional Standards.
