A motorcyclist was killed Sunday in a traffic crash in St. Petersburg.

It happened on 38th Avenue North near 58th Street North.

Police say a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt was stopped, facing westbound, in the center turn lane of 38th Avenue North, waiting to make a left turn into the Northside Baptist Church, located at 6000 38th Avenue North.

A 1995 Honda sport motorcycle, being operated by 22-year-old Jimmie Allen Hawk, was traveling eastbound on 38th Avenue North.

According to several witnesses, police said Hawk was operating his motorcycle at a high rate of speed and aggressively weaving in and out of traffic for at least several blocks.

As Hawk entered the 6000 block of 38th Avenue North, police said he made a quick change from the median lane into the curb lane, between two cars that occupied the respective lanes and rapidly accelerated.

At the same time, the Chevrolet driver began turning left and was traveling across both eastbound lanes. Hawk's motorcycle slammed into the right side of the vehicle, ejecting Hawk from the motorcycle.

Hawk, who police said was wearing a helmet and riding jacket at the time, was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with life threatening injuries where he died several hours later.
