Pedestrian struck, killed on U.S. 27 in Lake Wales

A 27-year-old Lake Wales man was struck by a pickup truck and killed Monday night in Lake Wales, authorities said.

Around 9:30 p.m., Cody Williams was walking south in the middle of the southbound right lane of U.S. 27, approaching Jackson Street. He had his back to traffic, and the area was poorly lit, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

A 2004 Ford F-150 driven by Cynthia Waters, 65, of Lake Placid was also traveling south on the highway and had moved to the left lane and then back to the right lane before striking the pedestrian.

Waters stopped and rendered aid, but Williams was pronounced dead at Lake Wales Hospital later.

U.S. 27 was closed in the area for about four hours. The FHP is still investigating.
