A Hillsborough County teacher has been named Macy's/Florida's Teacher of the Year.

Diane McKee, 58, is an English teacher at Williams Middle Magnet School. She has been a teacher for 14 years, 11 of those in Florida.

McKee received the award at a banquet Thursday night in Orlando.

"I'm honored. I'm humbled," said McKee.

Some of her accomplishments include helping her students excel on state tests. She's also known for attending students' activities outside the classroom to show her support.

Students describe McKee is a "mother figure."

She was selected from a field of 190,000 public school teachers statewide. McKee said she couldn't do it alone.

"It truly takes a village. And it takes all of us to make that happen," McKee said.

McKee was presented with a $10,000 check. She will also receive a trip to New York City for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

She will be taking a one-year hiatus from teaching to travel the state on a speaking tour.
