Bands of constant rain drummed on Mary Weston’s roof for weeks.

“Well I never saw so much rain,” Weston said. “Never so much rain, so steady like two or three weeks.”

The grandmother of two worried if the roof would hold up. It didn’t. Last week, the roof collapsed in the back bedroom of her mobile home. The leaks and dips spread throughout the home.

Weston’s home of 22 years was no longer livable.

“It was like sort of beyond repair,” Weston said. “I figured I better start looking for another place,”

At 82 years old and on a fixed income, Weston couldn’t afford a new roof. She tried a few places, but they were too expensive, she said. She reached out to Pasco Tax Collector Mike Fasano, who reached out to local business Farrell Roofing.

Anna Farrell, whose parents own the business, said her dad knew he had to help Weston.

“It kind of breaks your heart that someone was sitting and living like this with no help,” Farrell said.

Volunteers spent a wet Saturday repairing the home. Water had seeped into the walls and ceiling. Most of the mobile home had to be gutted, for mold and water damage.

The rain continued on Saturday afternoon as volunteers stabilized the roof beams. A completely new roof will be installed, Farrell said. They will also make repairs to the walls and floors inside the home, as well as getting Weston new furniture and kitchen supplies.

“It’s wonderful to be able to help her out in any way that we can, to come out in the community and help those who can’t help themselves,” Farrell said.

Weston almost can’t believe so many people came to help her.

“Oh you have no idea,” she said. “I feel wonderful.”

For Weston’s neighbor and friend Mariam Bakar, it’s refreshing.

“I cannot believe it that there are still that many people in this world that are kind to help those who are in need of help,” Bakar said.

Farrell says it will take about a week to finish Weston’s home. In the meantime, Weston is staying at a local hotel, for free.
