More help is on the way for residents dealing with flooding in the Bay area. A recovery center will open Wednesday in Pasco County that will offer services that could help with the damage.

“The whole house is gone,” said Rudolph Chuites as he waded through about a foot of water in his Bass Lake home.

The sun has been peeking out through the trees for a few days now, but Chuites will tell you it’s been dark.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg, it always floods here when there’s rain here, the lake is right there you see it yourself, there’s no flood wall,” he said.

The county emergency management director says they’ve looked at fixes to the flooding problem in Bass Lake but can’t do much because of the location.

“There’s no drainage options at that location, it’s a big bowl it continues to fill up,” said Pasco County Emergency Management Director, Annette Doying.

When it fills up, Chuites gets stuck dealing with a mess.

“Six inches minimum,” said Chuites as he used a stick to measure the water in the least flooded area of his backyard.

Unfortunately Chuites no longer has flood insurance to help cover the costs. However, help is coming.

FEMA will be in the county Thursday to assess the damage but in the meantime the county is opening a flood recovery center.

“If repair can be affected we’re going to help you get that repair conducted,” said Doying. “If you physically need to be relocated into a rental unit or into a new home, if you owned a home and now you need to own a new home, we’re prepared to begin to assist with that.”

Doying said to bring documents to the recovery center like your deed.

It will also now be offering free vaccines. Unfortunately it’s something that came too late for people like Chuites.

“We ended up spending all day running around all over town which we could have been here,” he said. “We spent all just finally having to pay for our own tetanus shot.”

Bay News 9 asked the health department if there would be reimbursements for those who had the shots on their own, but it won’t happen. For a free shot you must bring proof of your address. You can get the shot at a clinic located at 10841 Little Rd. in New Port Richey.

All support stations will close Wednesday night except for the one in Bass Lake.

The recovery center is opening Wednesday at 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., located at 7536 State Street in New Port Richey.

Several outside agencies were brought into to assist Pasco Monday. Personnel came from Hillsborough, Miami, Key Biscayne, and Port San Lucie.
