A Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputy was shot in the thigh overnight while responding to a call in Thonotosassa.

According to HCSO Col. Donna Lusczynski, Dep. Scott Ranney suffered non-life threatening injuries when he was shot in the left thigh just after 12:30 a.m. outside a duplex in the 9400 block of Greystone Road.

Ranney, 42, was treated at Tampa General Hospital and released just after 7 a.m.

Authorities said three deputies responded to a 911 call about shots fired in the neighborhood. When they responded, they spotted a man. That person fired shots at the deputies, officials said.

“It was like 10 gunshots,” said Zoie Vereen. “We knew something was happening. Then we heard the helicopters. Somebody told us they were blocking off the neighborhood. There were police at every end of the street."

May McNeal lives across from where the shooting happened. She has lived in the neighborhood for 38 years and says it’s recently changed.

“People who lived here worked and had jobs, families. But now, it's whoever can rent the apartment. They're not very selective, as long as they can pay the rent, they are there. That is my personal opinion. It is time for me to go,” McNeal said.

Deputies returned fire but it is unknown if the suspect was shot. A search continues for the suspect. No description of the suspect has been released.

"Right now we have a lot of resources and patrol personnel and detectives out there so it is safe, but then again if anybody sees anything unusual or suspicious contact the sheriff's office immediately," Lusczynski said.

Ranney has been with HCSO since 2009, starting as a detention deputy. He became a patrol deputy in 2014.

Authorities said residents are safe. Numerous deputies, K-9s and patrol helicopters are involved in the search.

Two people have been detained for questioning, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office.
