Penny Magdziak is in the business of making people beautiful.

Her salon on Swann Avenue is usually buzzing with hair cuts, dye jobs and updo's.

It was until Saturday afternoon, when record-breaking rainfall made its way into her salon.

"We're going to have to rip up the base boards, and possibly cut the dry wall as well for the mold," Magdziak said. "That's the biggest thing, is the mold."

Her business is called U.b.U Color Salon. In the 10 years she's been here, Magdziak said, she's never seen flooding that bad.

The heavy rainfall wasn't the worst part, she said.

"It wasn't the rain that caused (the damage)," she said. "They didn't shut down Swann and the cars were flying through here and just sending waves of water."

The water washed into her business and got into everything. Her friends and family spent Sunday tearing up the floors and baseboards to get rid of the wet wood.

Magdziak said she called the authorities and asked them to shut down Swann.

"I said it's an emergency and businesses are flooding and basically several hours later they shut it down," she said. "But by then, it's too late."

Bruce Uba owns Germaine Pharmacy and Compound, located next door to the beauty parlor. Uba and his family were also cleaning up today, vacuuming what they could out of the soaked carpets.

His wife happened to check in on the pharmacy yesterday, which is normally closed on the weekends. She noticed the flooding and then saw sparks fly from the refrigerator. She quickly cut the power.

"That saved the situation," Uba said. "Because I think they whole building might have been on fire yesterday."

Uba isn't sure exactly how much of their computers and supplies were damaged, or how much they would cost to fix. However, he said no medical records or prescription drugs became water-logged, as they are stored high up and away from the flood water.

Uba said he plans to open up his pharmacy tomorrow and should be able to fill prescriptions as usual. Patients who want their medicine compounded, however, will have to wait, as the compounding equipment is likely damaged.

Magdziak's hair salon is normally closed on Sundays and Mondays. She plans to resume business as usual Tuesday. Even if the floor is just exposed concrete.
