Hillsborough County is the last county in the Tampa Bay region to start the new school year. But with 87,000 students boarding buses today, it certainly isn't the least in enrollment.

The Hillsborough County School Board invested in the district's transportation department for the 2015-16 school year, and as a result, there's a full fleet of working buses and a full complement of drivers for all routes. In fact, the county even has some substitute drivers ready to go.

Over the summer, the transportation department hired more mechanics to make repairs to its fleet. And next month, the transportation department will ask the School Board to purchase 20 new buses. That would be on top of the 100 new buses the district bought last year.

Of course, new buses don't need near the amount of maintenance as old buses.

Most of the other counties in the region started school Monday. Citrus County students have been in session for two weeks.
