The days for the old St. Petersburg pier could soon be numbered.

City officials said the Army Corps of Engineers could announce a date to start demolition anytime now.

Earlier this summer the city council approved plans to build the new Pier Park in its place, but city officials say once the old pier comes down it won't be tossed in the trash.

"Some cement pilings, some giant cement pieces, they're going to be used to shore up the beach along the Albert Whitted airport," said Mayor Rick Kriseman's spokesman Ben Kirby. "So we're repurposing some of these pieces from the pier. The pier will live on in other forms."

Right now the city is awaiting a letter from the state historical preservation office to clear the way for the Army Corps of Engineers to set a date. Once the date is set, city officials say it could take as up to six months for the demolition to be completed.

The new Pier Park is expected to be completed by 2018.
