September is a great month to save money on summer merchandise, but it doesn’t end there.

There are plenty of items that trigger deals as autumn begins.

Cars, cars, cars

One of the biggest places to save is at the car dealership. September is when next year’s new car models hit the show room floor. And that means good deals on the 2015 models.

“The factories want to move the cars and get the new models out and get the old ones gone,” Bill Currie Ford General Manager Tim Joslin says.

Look for big rebates and incentives. Depending on the vehicle, in some cases you could save up to $12,000.

“You could actually get below invoice on some of these cars, easily,” Joslin said.

Currie Ford customer Tim White said getting a good deal is one of the most important things to him when he buys a car.

“It’s all about the savings,” White said.

For extra savings, the end of the month can be one of the best times to buy. Sales people often have extra incentive to negotiate to meet monthly quotas.

Appliances, not so much

When it comes to major appliances, a lot of folks think September is a key time for deals.  Turns out, that’s not the case. There is a lot of misinformation circulating on the Internet about this, but we talked with several appliance dealers about it. They say, unlike cars, there is no real coordinated time of year that new appliance models come out that would trigger sales.

Instead, the best time to look for deals on appliances is around major holidays like Labor Day, the Fourth of July, Memorial Day and, of course, Black Friday.

All things Summer

With Labor Day over, September is the best time to buy "all things summer."  Look for major savings on everything from grills to patio furniture.

“Anywhere from 10 percent to, it can go all the way up to 75 percent, off. It just depends on what product you’re looking for,” Lowes Manager Scott Roether says.

And look for sales on garden supplies from mulch to flowers to wasp spray.

“This is when the prices are really rock bottom,” said Lowes customer Mel Sullivan, who was marveling at the sale price on wasp spray at five cans for $5. “That’s a tremendous savings,” he said.

Airline Tickets

You might not be thinking Thanksgiving and Christmas travel just yet, but six to 10 weeks before you fly is the best time to buy a plane ticket. That puts you right in the middle of September.

Java

And perk up for the end of the month.  Sept. 29 is National Coffee Day. Many food chains will offer discounted and even free coffee.

Make sure to grab those September savings while you can. Once these deals are done, you won’t find super bargains again until Black Friday.
