A major roadway in east-central Pinellas County has reopened after being closed all day because of a fuel spill.

Officials have reopened 118th Avenue N. just west of the I-275 interchange following a collision between a garbage truck and semitrailer carrying liquid nitrogen early Wednesday.

Westbound 118th Avenue was closed near 47th Street, and traffic was rerouted. Two lanes of eastbound 118th Avenue were left open.

Crews tried to resurface the road, which was damaged by diesel fuel and oil, but they'll have to complete the task Sunday night, police said.

The garbage truck was backing out of a business around 3:30 a.m. when it was struck by the semi. Although no one was seriously injured, some nitrogen escaped, police said.

A hazardous materials team responded to the scene, and the leak was contained by 7 a.m. The public was never in danger, police said.

The driver of the garbage truck, Darryl W. Johnston, 52, was cited in the crash, police said.
