Palmetto police say the man charged with killing a couple and their unborn child when he crashed into their mobile home was under the influence of marijuana and cocaine at the time.

Christian Crawford, 36, of Bradenton, is facing three counts of driving while intoxicated, manslaughter and one count of driving while intoxicated with serious bodily injury. Police say he turned himself into authorities on Wednesday.

Authorities say that just after 2:30 a.m. on April 1, Crawford crashed his Chevy SUV into the mobile home where Ivan Carlos, 21, and Brenda Avilez, 18, were sleeping. Carlos and Avilez, who was nine months pregnant, were killed. The unborn child died as well.

Crawford previously spent about 20 months in prison on cocaine possession and delivery charges. He was released in August 2014.

Police say Crawford was impaired when his SUV left U.S. 41 near Seventh Street West and smashed into the side of a home in the Lone Oak Mobile Home Park. The impact was so forceful, the couple was pushed into their neighbor's home.

At the time of the crash, Crawford was cooperative with the investigation, police said. Initially he did not appear to be intoxicated or on drugs, authorities say. The blood analysis took several months to complete and found marijuana and cocaine in his system at the time of the crash, police said. The analysis did not find any alcohol in his system.

Police Chief Scott Tyler said they were able to arrest Crawford shortly after the results of the analysis came back.

"The reason it's taken so long is the lab analysis took so long and once we got it back we needed to review it and talk to experts and get a feeling for the case," he said.

Carlos and Avilez were planning a baby shower at the time of their deaths. It was scheduled for a week later.

Crawford is being held without bond at the Manatee County jail.
