History came to life in Hernando County Sunday with the annual Brooksville Raid Civil War reenactment.

Every January you can step back in time to when troops were camped in the woods, ready to fight.

Civil War re-enactors came from near and far to play the part and put on the annual Brooksville Raid.

"We try real hard to get our camp site right, our uniforms right," said reenactor Ronald Boyce. "We talk about the history, the battle and people in it."

We're told the actual raid happened back in 1864 when the Union troops took on Confederate troops. They took cattle and destroyed homes and farmland.

"It's like playing army on a grand, adult scale," Boyce said.

Shawn Akins and his family made the drive from down south to step back in time. He says events like this are very important.

"I think it's great," he said. "Maintain some history, keep it alive. Educate some people and have a good time."

An annual trip back in time, that happens right here in our own backyard.

Organizers say the Brooksville Raid has become one of the largest Civil War reenactments in the state. Usually around 1,500 re-enactors show up for the event.
