Hernando County's Teacher of the Year has only been out of school a couple of years himself.

Brandon Wright has been teaching social studies for six years, and he is already making a big impact. He loves teaching, and his students at Springstead High School love having him as their teacher.

"I care," Wright said. "I'm not just some guy to stand up here and tell you what's in the book."

Wright is also the Hernando County School District's 2016 Teacher of the Year.

"To be recognized at this level is pretty special," he said.

At 29, Wright is one of the youngest teachers to ever win the title. When you think of Teacher of the Year, you think of teachers with decades of experience. Wright was in graduate school six years ago.

"Being a caring person and being interested in what they are doing and trying to engage them is ageless," he said. "Doesn't matter if I'm 65 or 25."

Springstead High principal Carmine Rufa said Wright is very good at connecting with his students.

"Once you have the connection and the kids on your side, they will perform for you," Rufa said.

Wright is now in the running for Florida Teacher of the Year.
