A man was killed early Wednesday in a crash in St. Petersburg involving a car and a semi.

According to St. Petersburg police, the crash happened just before 6 a.m. at 38th Avenue N and 41st Street N.

Police say the tractor trailer was heading south on 42nd Street N when it stopped at the intersection with 38th Avenue N, then proceeded to make a left turn. A 2003 Honda Civic, driven by Dante Acquarolo, 25, of St. Petersburg, was heading west on 38th Avenue N at the same time.

Police say Acquarolo was unable to avoid the truck and the Civic became wedged under the trailer, then was dragged a short distance.

Acquarolo died at the scene of the crash.

Police say the pavement was wet from the overnight rain and it was still dark, but investigators cannot definitively say if weather was a factor.

The intersection was closed for five hours for the investigation.
