An elderly Winter Haven woman got the Christmas gift she’s been waiting on for years -- someone to come and fix the plumbing in her home.

  • Billy Sue Ewing had longtime plumbing issues in her home
  • Phillip's Plumbing selected her for holiday giveaway
  • Email Phillipsplumbingco@hotmail.com to nominate winner for next year

Billy Sue Ewing said the pipes in her home had been leaking for quite some time, and the pipes under her kitchen sink didn’t even function anymore.

"We tote the water out and put it out in the back," said Ewing. "We had to tote it out in buckets."

The pipes around her bathtub weren’t functioning properly either.

"It's molding. You can see the mold on the wall,” Ewing said. "It's about as bad as you can get.”

Ewing lost three of her children in recent years, and she’s caring for a disabled son and great grandkids. Living off of $800 a month, the 78-year-old said she had to put off getting her plumbing fixed.

Those struggles are the main reason Phillip’s Plumbing selected her for its “Helping Hands for the Holidays Giveaway.” Two of her granddaughters nominated her.

“I was surprised, very surprised.” Ewing said.

The company re-piped her entire home on Saturday, and gave her a new water heater.

"It's a blessing. Very needed," Ewing said.

Phillip’s Plumbing said the job would’ve cost between $3,000 to $5,000. It plans to have the giveaway every year from now on.

The company is already accepting applications for one lucky homeowner next year. You can nominate someone by emailing Phillipsplumbingco@hotmail.com.
