Officials are holding free tire disposal events in an effort to help control the mosquito population in Hillsborough County.

Stagnant water in old tires can become a haven for mosquitoes, which are not only annoying but can also spread illnesseslike Zika and dengue to human beings.

In an attempt to get rid of those mosquito breeding sites, Hillsborough County is allowing residents to drop off up to 10 tires for free on Saturday.

This event is open to all residents of Hillsborough County, including people who live in Tampa, Plant City and Temple Terrace. Residents will need to show at least one form of ID showing a street address, including a Florida driver's license, Florida vehicle registration or utility bill.

Businesses cannot participate in this event.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 4115 S. 66th St. in Tampa.

Residents of unincorporated Hillsborough County who are not able to make it to the event can still dispose of up to 12 tires per year at the following centers:

  • Alderman Ford Facility, 9402 S.R. 39, Lithia, (813) 757-3820
  • Hillsborough Heights Facility, 6209 C.R. 579, Seffner, (813) 744-5533
  • Northwest County Facility, 8001 W. Linebaugh Ave., Tampa, (813) 264-3816
  • South County Facility, 13000 U.S. 41 S., Gibsonton, (813) 671-7611

Residents should bring a photo ID and their most recent property tax bill to the centers, which are open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Tampa expanding tire disposal services

The City of Tampa is also expanding their tire disposal services.  Between Saturday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 20, each Tampa resident will be allowed to drop off up to eight tires without rims at the McKay Bay Refuse-to-Energy facility, located at 114 South 34th Street in Tampa.

Free disposal at the facility will require a City of Tamp utility bill and matching identification. Normal disposal fees will apply to business owners.

The city's normal collection service allows them to place up to four tires without rims at the curb for collection on their schedule day.
