The plan to close a smelly Spring Hill wastewater plant is on schedule, officials say.

Residents near the Osowaw Wastewater Treatment Plant have complained about the stench from the plant for years. County officials voted to shut the plant for good in 2014.

On Wednesday, officials with the Hernando County Utilities Department announced that construction to divert sewer flows from the Osowaw plant to the Airport Wastewater Treatment Plant is on schedule.

The agency has been expanding the Airport plant's treatment capacity from 1 million gallons per day to 3.5 million gallons per day, with the ability to process up to 5 million gallons per day. That expansion is set to be finished by fall of 2016.

Once that's finished, the county will divert the sewage from the Osowaw plant, which officials say will eliminate the stench.

The Osowaw plant will be demolished soon afterward.
