Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a man suspected of being the driver in a fatal hit-and-run Sunday.

  • Crash occurred at 49th Ave. N. and 61st Lane N. in Kenneth City
  • Incident began with an altercation between two drivers

Investigators say the victim, Sean McCasland, 19, had an altercation with the driver of a red Ford F250 pick-up trunk in front of McCasland's home at around 10:50 a.m. At one point during the altercation, McCasland jumped onto the truck, at which time the driver, Tyler Johnson, 20, tried driving away.

Witness told investigators that McCasland hung off the driver's side door of the truck until it reached 61st Lane North, where he fell off and the truck stopped. Johnson then reportedly drove over McCasland with the rear tires of his truck as he left the scene.

McCasland was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, and later died.

Deputies tracked down Johnson and his truck and took him into custody without incident at about 8:20 p.m., according to officials. Johnson was charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash involving Death.

The investigation is ongoing.
