A woman was killed Tuesday during a Citizen’s Police Academy training scenario in Punta Gorda, police said.

The woman, identified as Mary Knowlton, was one of 35 people who attended the Citizens Police Academy.
According to police, Knowlton was struck with “a live round” by a police officer during one of the scenarios. She was pronounced dead at Lee Memorial Hospital.
Police have not commented on why live ammunition was used during the training scenario.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct the investigation.
