The Lake Wales Police Department said Anna Adams, 57, and Timothy Adams, 28, were charged with child neglect without bodily harm and taken to the Polk County Jail.

The incident occurred just after 4 p.m. Tuesday. Officers went to the Walmart on State Road 60 after receiving a report about the girl in the vehicle.

The temperature at the time was 86 degrees, with a "feels like" temperature of 95, according to police.

The vehicle's rear-vent windows were cracked open, the doors were locked and the vehicle was not running. Police said the child's hair was wet from sweating and that her cheeks were red.

Officers broke the front-passenger window and removed the girl.

The suspects, who were inside the business, were paged and told to return to the vehicle.

According to a police news release, "Both Anna and Timothy claim they thought the other had the child with them even though they walked in the store together."

The girl was taken to Lake Wales Medical Center as a precaution but was not injured.

Police said video of the incident showed the suspects remove a 6-year-old girl from the vehicle, using a shopping cart to take the girl inside the store.

Authorities said they left the 3-year-old in the car alone for about 20 minutes.
