While serving a narcotics search warrant Tuesday morning, SWAT team members shot a man at an east Tampa home deputies say was unarmed.

The man later died.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the shooting happened at 1432 Longwood Loop in Palm River just before 8 a.m.

Deputies said the warrant was served after a monthlong investigation and that multiple people inside the home complied except for Levonia Riggins, 22.

According to a news release, a SWAT team member, Deputy Caleb Johnson, issued numerous commands for Riggins to get out of the home. Johnson then found Riggins in a bedroom, perceived him as an "immediate threat" and fired one shot at him.

Riggins was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he died.

Investigators said that although the investigation is ongoing, it appears that Riggins was unarmed at the time he was shot.

Officials said the SWAT team was called in because of Riggins' criminal record and reports that he owned guns.

There were no other injuries. Johnson was placed on administrative leave with pay, pending a review. The State Attorney's Office is investigating.
