A Florida congressman collapsed Wednesday afternoon at the U.S. Capitol.

A freshman congressman from Jacksonville, John Rutherford was wheeled out of the U.S. Capitol on a stretcher just after 6 p.m. Rutherford, 64, was "conscious, alert and in good spirits" at George Washington University Hospital Wednesday night. 

Kelly Simpson, Rep. John Rutherford's chief of staff, says doctors are evaluating what happened but the congressman did not have a heart attack Wednesday.

A Republican, Rutherford worked in law enforcement for 41 years and served as sheriff in Jacksonville before being elected to Congress last November. He represents Florida's 4th Congressional District.

Simpson says further updates on Rutherford's condition "will be provided once doctors have finished their evaluation."
