The Citrus County Community Choir has been invited to sing in the show Glory of Freedom in February.

Jacki Scott started the group 14 years ago.

“I put a little ad in the newspaper,” Scott recalled.

Since then, the group has grown to more than 50 singers, ranging in age from 30 years old to 87 years young.

“It’s a feeling of accomplishment, because I never thought that I would ever be able to do it not having any formal training,” said Barbara Benson, 84.

The group has traveled the world together, including performances in Austria, France, and a very special event at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

“The 70th commemoration of Pearl Harbor... The choir got to sing on the deck of the USS Missouri on the 4th of July,” Scott said.

Now, the group is headed to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall.

“It’s going to be an experience," Benson said, "and if I had a resume, it would be a nice thing to put on the resume.

“Other than being a real honor, it’s kind of exciting and scary all at the same time,” said choir member Tom Rooney, 71.

The choir leaves for New York in February to perform on Feb. 19.

The group is raising funds and accepting donations for the trip.
