A decision to expand phosphate mining in Manatee County is still up in the air.

  • Mosaic mining expansion in Manatee still undecided
  • Commission rescheduled meeting for third day
  • Mosaic requests 3-thousand acre mining expansion

The public comment period on Monday went on for more than eight hours, so the meeting was rescheduled for a third day.

Mosaic's senior manager, Bart Arrington, said the land already belongs to Mosaic, they just want to be able to mine on it.

"It's our land and we have, it's been in phosphate mining ownership since the 60s so it's always been intended in industry standard to be expanded to into the future," said Arrington.

Mosaic is requesting to expand by more than 3,000 acres.

However, many are worried after a sinkhole opened up in Polk County a few months ago.

The commission will meet again to deliberate on Feb. 15.
