The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating two shootings that occurred within an hour of each other.

  • 2 shootings in Thonotosassa possibly connected, deputies say
  • Shootings occurred within 1 hour of each other
  • Both are related to reported carjackings, investigators say

The first shooting occurred at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday at a residence on Oakwood Drive in Thonotosassa. Deputies responded to a report of an attempted carjacking.

Investigators said a woman was getting out of her vehicle when someone wearing a tan short-sleeve T-shirt and a rubber Halloween mask displayed a handgun and demanded the woman's keys to her vehicle. The woman told deputies that she refused to turn over her keys and hit the person with her foot.

The person then fired a single round into the woman's carport before fleeing on a motor scooter, officials said. The woman was not injured.

The second shooting occurred about 45 minutes later at the intersection of Pemberton Creek Drive and Muck Pond Road in Thonotosassa.

When deputies arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound to his back. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was treated for a non-life threatening injury.

Deputies determined that a person wearing a gray T-shirt, black gym shorts and an orange mask approached the man in his vehicle. The unidentified person fired three to four shots toward the vehicle before fleeing on foot.

Deputies think the two shootings are connected.

Anyone with information on the shootings are asked to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at 813-247-8200.
