An email phishing scheme may have put the sensitive information of thousands of Manatee County school district employees at risk.

  • 7,700 Manatee County schools employees personal data may be at risk
  • Phishing scheme netted names, addresses, salaries and social security numbers
  • School district using security company to monitor employees' data

The district’s deputy superintendent of business Ron Ciranna said Monday that employees' names, addresses and Social Security numbers were obtained by hackers.

According to the Bradenton Herald, the information of 7,700 school employees may be at risk.

Ciranna told the Herald that hackers were able to breach the system when a district payroll employee responded to a fraudulent email last month that appeared to be sent by Superintendent Diana Greene, asking for the information.

The breach, which could potential impact anyone who worked for the district in 2016, is being investigated and the district is working with a security company that is monitoring employees' personal data.
