You may not be offered that free slice of lunch meat the next time you head to your local Publix deli.

  • Publix to no longer offer free slice of deli meat
  • Instead, they're offering cheese of the week
  • However, if you ask, customers can still try a slice of meat

The chain is putting a stop to the practice of offering you a sample of your order in 260 of its central and southwest Florida stores.

But don’t fret, loyal Publix customers -- you’ll still get your free food.

“The only change is they’re not offering it because they’re offering you a slice of the cheese of the week as you approach the counter,” said Brian West, Media and Communications Manager for Publix. “If you want that slice of whatever product you ordered, you can absolutely have it. Just tell them you want a sample of that.”

Some customers took to social media saying they didn’t like the change. Bay News 9 went to a local Publix to get opinions from regular shoppers.

Is it all about the slice of deli meat?

It turns out no one seems too bothered by it.

“I’m not here to eat their free slices. I’m here to shop and buy my groceries,” said shopper Cecilia Valdes.

“Usually I order what I’m familiar with. So this may introduce me to some new products. I’m fine with it,” said Josue Cruz.

Getting new and different products to customers is the ultimate goal, according to West.

“When they get a chance to try things, they’re hopefully going to fall in love with something new,” said West.

Bottom line: customers say they’ll return, any way you slice it.
