While Polk County firefighters were working a brush fire Wednesday afternoon, they came across another unexpected danger.

Officials said fire crews were in the Indian Lake Estates area working a brush fire when a rattlesnake slithered by.

Luckily, no one was injured.

Firefighters said this is why they always have to stay alert.

“This shows some of the dangers our firefighters face,” said Battalion Chief Chris Hancock. “I’m thankful no one was injured and I’m thankful the wind was blowing in the opposite direction of a nearby home.”

The two acre brush fire was in a wooded area off Azalea Drive. Fire crews started working on the fire just before 3 p.m. and were able to extinguish it by 4 p.m.
