Tampa native and Nascar racer Aric Almirola was involved in a severe crash Saturday night during the Monster Energy Nascar Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway.

Officials said he had to be airlifted to the hospital and is in stable condition.

"Seeing the pictures this morning and seeing the video, he was in pain getting out of the car. It never stops being gut wrenching. He's your son," Bobbi Almirola, Aric's mom, said.

Danica Patrick was also involved in the wreck and is expected to be okay.

Almirola was born at Eglin Air Force Base and raised in Daytona.

He drives the No. 43 Ford Fusion for Richard Petty Motorsports.

"A lot of people, when they connect me to Aric, they say 'Oh it's so wonderful you have a racecar driver as a son, you must be so proud.' And I am proud, but it's not because he's a racecar driver, it's because he has a dream and he's following his dream," Bobbi said.

She also said he has a fractured vertebrae in his spine, but is expected to have a full recovery.
