A unique float -- the first of its kind in the nation's history -- is set to take part in this year's Gasparilla invasion festivities.

  • "The Treasure Chest" designed for special needs riders
  • Float equipped with motorized wheelchair lift, accessible bathroom
  • Float is first ADA-compliant float in U.S. history

The float is called "The Treasure Chest." It's designed to accommodate riders with special needs.

Renee Adams of "The Krewe of the Sir Francis Drake" told us their float is the first ADA-compliant float in the country's history.

"Our hope is that people will follow in our footsteps and join in on our journey," said Adams. "If one more float puts on a lift or puts in an accessible bathroom, it opens the doors greatly to all the community."

The Krewe said they have been overwhelmed by the positive response they've received from people in the special needs community. "The Treasure Chest" recently took part in the Children's Gasparilla Parade on Jan. 20.
